Children and Young People's Trust Wide SLT Programme

A key transformation area for 2023-2024 is to look at the model for delivering Speech and Language Therapy Services (SaLT).

SLCN

An outline of a clinical model has been agreed with the Service Leads

  • Key principles of this model are that there aren’t strict tiers or barriers to access, that children and young people may require a blend of support and it is more important that this support is timely and delivered in the right setting and by the most appropriate person.
  • Whilst the model takes certain elements from the balanced system model it differs in practice by exploring a more flexible approach across universal, targeted and specialist support.

Priority Areas of Focus

To understand where each service is against the model a gap analysis framework was established which identified key areas of focus. It was agreed that four workstreams would be established to commence work on these areas. The workstreams have been led by the Improvement and Transformation team and volunteers/representatives from across all three areas were invited to support and lead on this work. The four key areas of focus are:

A project was initiated with the following objectives:

To create a consistent model for Speech and Language Therapy services across the Trust, aligned to our local contracts which helps:

  • Reduce unwarranted variation in relation to service offers.
  • Increase system-wide understanding and engagement with the three-tiered model.
  • Address health inequalities.
  • Standardised approach to the use of job planning in SaLT services.
